TONE POEMS ON WOMANHOOD

by Kristen Gonzalez

We’re excited to introduce a series of Tone Poems on Womanhood perfectly encapsulated by director, Natasha Kermani, and production company, Matiz Creative.
This series of Tone Poems are vignettes of the various stages of womanhood and the relationships we develop in the process.

Tone Poem on Motherhood: Chivonne

To my daughter —
since your very first kick, I have fallen more in love with you every day.
My tiny dancer.
I feel you move and a smile breaks out onto my face.
I cannot wait to teach you all the things that I know and learn all the things that I don't know from your brilliant little self.
I promise to love you and hold you and give you the strength and joy of your ancestors that was given to me.
I love you so much, already.

Tone Poem on Sisterhood: Dana & Davida

Little sister —
as I’ve witnessed you grow into a woman, I’ve learned to see you move through life as a melody of your own.
Creating your own path, singing your own song, dancing away your fears and joys.
As you continue to grow, always remember your heart and mine are linked beyond time.
You are the sunshine to my sky.
Remember to always rise and shine, because your light deserves to be seen.

Tone Poem on Womanhood: Kelsey

The women in my family knew how to grow, to harvest, and preserve, prepping for long winters, be them in frigid winters of Canada, or surviving against all odds the harsh camps of Siberia.

Strong hands in the dirt, finding life, and sustaining family.

In a culture of consumption, plants remind me that life is a circle, and I grow to remember what I can't forget, the knowledge from Baba's, aunties, for ancestors I will never meet.
